Note to Parents, Carers and Teachers
Read it yourself is a series of modern stories, favourite characters, traditional tales and first reference books, written in a simple way for children who are learning to read. The books can be read independently or as part of a guided reading session.
Each Level 0 book focuses on a set of graphemes (letters) and phonemes (sounds). The books also provide practice of common tricky words, such as the and said, that cannot be sounded out.
The books in this level closely follow the order that your child will be taught phonics in school. This helps to build reading confidence and reinforces school learning in a fun way.
Ideas for use
· Children learn best when reading is a fun experience. Read the book together and give your child plenty of praise and encouragement.
· Help your child identify and sound out the phonemes (sounds) in any words she is having difficulty reading. Then, blend these sounds together to read the word.
· Talk about the story words and tricky words at the end of each story to reinforce learning.
Two stories that build on the phonics learnt in previous steps, and focus on th sound and letter combinations: m, d, g, o, c, k, ck.
