The transparent body of this deep-sea squid is difficult for predators to see. However, its eyes can appear as dark shadows when lit by sunlight from above. Organs above its eyes use a chemical reaction involving a substance called luciferin to produce light which cancels out the shadows. The squid can then swin safely onwards
