JAWS Starter are simple books for young readers in Africa. The series provides interesting stories to encourage children to read for pleasure.
The books are at four levels, starting with wordbooks at the foundation level. Level 1 is for children who have just begun to read by themselves. Level 2 and 3 use progressively wider vocabulary and more complex sentence structures. The language has been carefully controlled at each level to make reading easy. Also, there are pictures on every page to help the pupils follow the story. At level 1, pupils can folow the story from the pictures alone.
Children can read JAWS Starter silently, either in class or at home. Encourage them to read as many as possible. Silent reading is one of the best ways in which your pupils can build their language skills.
Children like listening to stories, so you might also like to try reading some of the stories aloud to the whole class.
There are activities at the end of each book, on page 16. You can ask the pupils to complete the activities after they have read the story. They may need some guidance. If a word in an African language is used in the story, there will be a note of it's meaning on this page too.
